Except for the first race all races originate on the Cariboo Plateau (3000-4000’) where the weather can change from sunny to hail storms in minutes with bone chilling temperatures. The birds then drop down to the Kamloops, Merritt grasslands (2500’) where temperatures average 28° C. Near the end of the course the birds run into what we call the ‘Wall’. Apex Ski hill (7000’) stands in their way. Birds must find a way around it as they will not go over it. Mountain storms prevail in this area. Once past this hazard the birds drop to the desert floor (1200’) where temperatures can be over 35° C, then on to the loft. |
